Today we are doing a SMP fuel injector review. Is it time for you to replace your old worn out fuel injectors? Or are you looking to increase the size of your fuel injectors? It does not matter what you are doing, a street car needs as good fuel injectors as a race car, the only difference is the flow. You need to keep in mind that you might not gain any horsepower from a change. However a new set of fuel injectors can improve both idling as well as drive quality. You will get all the information yo need about SMP right here in the SMP fuel injector review. In this article I will be reviewing the SMP – 01D116B.

In this article: Overview / Design / Specs / Verdict

Overview

Who are SMP? SMP stands for Standard Motor Products. SMP has more than 95 years behind them, they design, manufacture and distributes an excess of 40,000 high quality engine management products. All of their products has one thing in common, they will not see outside daylight before they passes the strict quality controls. This is how SMP assures that you as a customer will revive a high quality item.

SMP has a wide range of parts available, everything from fuel injectors to turbocharger speed sensors. It does not matter of you have an import or a domestic car, this broad table of parts got you covered.

Design

This fuel injector comes with a stainless steel injector body for a good under the hood look. It’s a top feed fuel injector meaning that the fuel rail sits on top of the injector itself. For this reason it might not be a direct fit to Japanese cars since many of them has side feed fuel injectors. Both top and bottom o-ring is included and it’s a factory replacement part for many cars. SMP uses the same fuel rail clips as Bosch and Delphi so it’s a bolt on fit. These fuel injectors comes in a variety of sizes, from 37 lb/hr to 160 lb/hr. For those of you who wants cc:s it’s 390 cc/min – 1600 cc/min.

Specs

Here are the specs for the 48 lb/hr – 490 cc/min.

  • Bosch style model.
  • Resistance 12.2 Ohm
  • Bosch EV1/minitimer connector.
  • 3-prong cone spray pattern.
  • Static flow at 3 Bar (43.5 psi) = 492 cc/min – 48 lb/hr.
  • Dynamic flow at 3 Bar (43.5psi) 2.5ms pulse width @ 100Hz = 10,48 gm/pulse.
  • Viton o-rings.
  • O-ring grease included.
  • E85 compatible.
  • Methanol compatible.

Verdict

In overall I’m very pleased with the SMP fuel injectors. They do the job just fine and I have not experienced and internal fuel leaks. I have also not noticed any problems with using the 3-prone cone spray pattern, maybe the atomization of the fuel could be better, but I still think it’s good for a 3-prone cone pattern. There are one thing that does bother me, and that is that I think they are a bit loud, the sound of the solenoid is very distinct even in a race car application. Other than that it’s overall good product.
